Vengeance has no timeline.

Dani Butler is a drug-addled drifter who, at thirty years old, is still targeting Jim, her Vietnam-vet father, stealing and pawning right under his nose to feed her chemical appetite. When Jim is admitted to a VA hospital in the final stages of lung cancer, Dani sees an irresistible opportunity—swipe his keys and ride out the incoming hurricane in the comfort of his abandoned house in Holy Hell, Florida. And maybe ransack the place for opioids while she's at it.

Venturing out during the eye, Dani unwittingly rescues a serial killer's captive from a rundown home on the outskirts of the neighborhood. The next twelve hours tell a story she'd never heard. What really happened in Jim's final days in Vietnam that left a madman on a decades-long journey to settle a score.

About the author

Ken Hastings

Ken Hastings

Born and raised in New Jersey. Molded and shaped in Florida. Married and fine-tuned in California. Ken is a twice-produced screenwriter and a retired disc jockey and pub trivia host, who recently decided to convert his dusty spec scripts into novels. All The Houses Went Dark is the first of hopefully many. He now lives in Colorado with his wife, two sons, two Bengal cats and one uh-mazing mutt.

Early Warnings

“Hastings has created a gripping novel with a hard-edged voice and a fearless sense of momentum, this book pulls the reader into a world of violence, guilt, addiction, and vengeful reckoning. Its characters are damaged, dangerous, and painfully human. Cinematic and emotionally charged, this is the kind of novel that does not ask politely for your attention, it takes it by the throat.”

— Megan Stockton,

author of Pink Neon

“Vivid. Brutal. Disturbing. A bloody blast.”

— David Prior,

writer/director of The Empty Man

All The Houses Went Dark by Ken Hastings is a blood-soaked roller coaster ride that will have you struggling to catch your breath. From the jungles of Vietnam to hurricane-ravaged Florida, this story of addiction and revenge is cinematic in scope and relentless in its pace. Strap in. You’re in for a hell of a ride.”

— Reeshi Ray,

author of One Nation Under Gods

All The Houses Went Dark is a cinema-worthy tale centered on the journey of one man, fueled by hate, intent on revenge, and no mercy to give anyone that stands in his way. Hastings pulls the reader in with dynamic characters, high-voltage tension, and a finale that will keep readers on the edge of their seat until the last page is turned.”

— Candace Nola,

author of Bishop

“Ken Hastings’s debut novel is a manic roller coaster of a slasher primarily set against the frenetic, drenched hell of a Florida hurricane. With a vicious brute of a villain in Vietnam vet serial killer Horace Kaitch and a reluctant, complex heroine in Dani Butler, Hastings keeps the momentum going between them at breakneck speed, the quieter moments in-between revealing just enough backstory of the two to keep readers intrigued without ever losing the pace even for a split second. It’s a damned thrilling jolt to the system, one that I enjoyed every minute of.”

— Kenzie Jennings,

author of the Splatterpunk Award–nominated Reception & Red Station

“To say All The Houses Went Dark gets shot out of a cannon would be a gross understatement. This book takes you captive from the opening paragraph! Ken Hastings is an author to keep your eye on.”
